Design Considerations and Selection of Cost-Effective Switched Reluctance Drive for Radiator Cooling Fans

Switched reluctance motors (SRMs) are simple in structure, easy to manufacture, magnet-less, brushless, and highly robust compared other AC which makes them a good option for applications that operate harsh environment. However, the motor has non-linear magnetic characteristics, it comes with various pole-phase combinations circuit topologies causes many difficulties deciding on type choose. In this paper, viability of SRM as low-cost, rugged machine vehicle radiator cooling fan is considered. First, necessary design considerations presented, then three commonly use types analyzed: A 3-phase 6/4, 12/8, 4-phase 8/6 find their static dynamic characteristics so most suitable can be selected. Simulation results show produces highest efficiency less phase current reduces converter burden. asymmetric half bridge converter, eight power switches required thus put burden overall drive cost. As solution, Miller only six four SRM. To verify proposed idea, was manufactured tested. The used slightly reduced at 80.4%.
